Ragdolls are very popular in Japan, but what kind of personality do they have? They don't have the wildness of a Bengal, and they don't seem to be as mischievous as an American Shorthair.

Characteristics of Ragdolls

The word "Ragdoll" means exactly that—a doll. As their name suggests, when you pick them up, they relax and lean their bodies into you.

Their clear blue eyes are striking, but their beautiful fur color is also one of the Ragdoll's charms. They typically have patterns such as seal (chocolate), blue, or red on a white or cream base.

Large body with dense, smooth fur

Ragdolls are large cats, with females weighing 4-6 kg and males weighing 4-7 kg, some even reaching close to 10 kg. They have broad shoulders and chests and a muscular build. Their smooth, semi-long fur grows densely along their body, making them incredibly pleasant to pet.

Ragdolls are like tanuki?!

With their large, rounded bodies, thick tails, and darker fur on their faces and paws, Ragdolls are sometimes said to resemble "tanuki" (Japanese raccoon dogs).

The tanuki-like fur pattern is called "pointed," characterized by darker coloration on the central part of the face, ears, legs, and tail. This is quite similar to Siamese cats. Additionally, "mitted" Ragdolls have feet that look like they're wearing white socks, along with white chins and chests. History of Ragdolls

Ragdolls originated in the 1960s in America. Ann Baker, a breeder in California, was captivated by a long-haired seal point cat and began developing a new breed.

By breeding Persians, Birmans, and Burmese, a long-haired seal point cat, which became the foundation of the Ragdoll, was born. Because they remained docile when picked up, they were named "Ragdolls," meaning "dolls."

Initially, the breed was not recognized by cat registry organizations, and Ann Baker managed the Ragdoll lineage through her own organization. There seems to have been internal conflict, and some breeders left the organization, leading to recognition by the CFA (a global cat registry organization) in the 1970s.

Furthermore, Ann Baker's organization split in 1994, and independent breeders created the "Ragamuffin" breed from the Ragdoll lineage.

Ragdoll Personality

Ragdolls are said to be very docile cats. They don't mind being picked up and have an affectionate personality. They hardly ever meow and are very gentle and easygoing. They are unlikely to scratch furniture or chase things around.

This disease is common in large, long-haired cats and carries a risk of sudden death due to heart failure. If you notice your cat breathing heavily, getting tired easily, or walking strangely, you should take them to the vet immediately.

Unfortunately, there is no preventative measure, so regular check-ups such as X-rays and echocardiograms are important for early detection.

Daily brushing is essential

To maintain a Ragdoll's unique fluffy coat, daily grooming is essential. Brush them daily to prevent hairballs. Since they are cats who love physical contact, they should accept it willingly.
