When you realize that your child really loves you, it's a rewarding moment for any pet owner. I was watching a kitten video on YouTube, and my cat's jealous behavior warmed my heart.

This time, I'd like to share how my beloved cats, including Jiji, who passed away in May of this year, expressed their jealousy. I'm not sure who this essay is for, but I hope you enjoy it, whether by relating to it or making new discoveries like "My cat reacts differently!"

[In Jiji's case] "Jealousy biting" triggered by kitten meows

My beloved cat Jiji, who passed away in May this year, had a gentle personality and strong maternal instincts. When a friend brought a baby to our house, Jiji stretched to check on the baby. My friend was also touched by the heartwarming sight.

However, when it came to other cats, it was a different story. When Kotarou was a kitten, Jiji would actively deliver cat punches, engaging in a gentle fight, and when Leon joined the family, Jiji was indifferent.

Perhaps Jiji liked human babies but wasn't too fond of kittens.

Maybe because of that personality, when I watched kitten videos on YouTube, the moment she heard a meow, her eyes would change, and she'd bite my arm!

For some reason, she'd act suspiciously and continue to bite my arm until I stopped playing the video, as if to say, "You only need me!"

So, when I had to write an article about kitten videos for work, it was tough. It always turned into a scenario of the servant determined to write versus the cat who wouldn't tolerate infidelity, so I always wrote the article while appeasing her, saying, "Jiji, I love you the most. This is work, it's not cheating."

Now that Jiji is gone and I can watch kitten videos at my leisure, there are days when my heart is filled with the cuteness of that jealousy.

It's so lonely to not be bitten or to not be the object of jealousy. I want to experience that unique expression of love again. I feel like I've been searching for a way to get through those days since Jiji left.

[In Kotarou's case] He runs away somewhere, feeling dejected...

Kotarou is the biggest cat among my beloved felines (in terms of build), but he's actually the biggest scaredy-cat. He's very cautious, and if anyone other than me tries to touch his belly, he'll definitely bite.

Just like when his belly is touched, Kotarou carefully sniffs hands when someone tries to touch him. After checking who the person trying to touch him is, he'll let them touch him with a "You're okay!" kind of attitude, so people who pass his inspection are always moved and say, "Thank you!"

Perhaps because he's so cautious, when I watch kitten videos on YouTube, the moment he hears a meow, Kotarou will hide under the desk or dash away to a distant spot.

And then, for some reason, he'll come close to me, looking dejected. When I see his downcast face, I feel like he's asking, "Did you get another child besides me...?" and I can't help but explain, "This is just a video, it's not real..."

My servant is mine. Kotarou, who is always clinging to me, probably thinks so. To respond to his deep love, I make it a point to "avoid watching cat videos unless it's for work."

Kotarou, if you can, I'd be happy if you could learn to distinguish between the voices of real cats and those in videos.

[In Leon's case] He bites me because he wants to meet the kittens!

If Leon were human, he'd definitely be a social butterfly. He's very friendly and interacts with strangers without hesitation, so when my husband first started living with us, he would laugh every time Leon approached him, saying, "There's always one assertive classmate like this in every class."

Leon always joins in when my husband and I are talking. He seems to think he's human. Maybe that's why when a cat appears on TV, he watches it with interest, as if to say, "Is that a cat...?" Even though he himself is a cat.

However, perhaps because he lived with many cats in a rescue cat cafe until he was 4 months old, he loves not only humans but also cats. When I watch kitten videos on YouTube, he'll look around for the kittens and then bite me.

He's probably saying, "You hid the kitten! Let them out!" It's a "bite!" driven by different emotions than Jiji's.

His reaction was so amusing that once, I played a video of kitten meows and then mischievously hid my smartphone under the carpet.

Leon then carefully listened to the meows and pinpointed where the smartphone was hidden. Seeing his cleverness, I rushed over and praised him, saying, "You're amazing!" But Leon seemed displeased that there was no kitten.

As if to say, "Let me meet the kitten quickly! I know you're hiding them!", he continued to bite my hand as I petted him.

When I apologized, saying "I'm sorry. It was a momentary impulse," Leon gave me a cat punch to the head. I swore to myself that day that I would never play that prank again. I also learned about cats' persistence. My feline overlords are strong...

Even though they seem independent, it's the cuteness of cats that jealousy overflows when their owner shows interest in other cats. I want to continue to respond wholeheartedly to the direct love they direct towards me.
