Saying goodbye to your beloved cat is incredibly painful and sad. Some pet owners experience pet loss, leading to physical and mental distress.
The death of a beloved cat and pet loss can happen to anyone. In this article, we will explore ways to overcome the death of a beloved cat and heal from pet loss.
What is Pet Loss?

Pet loss refers to the feelings of loss and grief experienced when a pet dies. It is also known as pet loss syndrome.
Pet loss can cause various emotions such as guilt, regret, and loneliness, as well as "mental distress" such as uncontrollable crying, listlessness, and depression. In severe cases, "physical symptoms" such as insomnia, loss of appetite, fatigue, and dizziness can also appear.
The duration of pet loss symptoms varies from person to person; some people recover in about a month, others take several months, and some cases can last for years.
Can Other Cats in the Household Also Experience Pet Loss?
While cats are often thought of as having cool personalities, it is known that cats can also experience pet loss when a companion cat or dog passes away.
Just like human owners, they may show mental and physical distress and behave differently than usual, so it's important to observe them carefully.
What Causes Pet Loss?

Pet loss is caused by the emotional shock of the death and separation from a cherished pet.
The death of a cat that was raised with great love and lived together with their owner must be unbearable for the owner. Furthermore, feelings of regret towards the cat are said to intensify the symptoms of pet loss.
The fact that many owners suffer from pet loss is a testament to how much they loved their cats.
How to Recover from Pet Loss

The triggers for recovering from pet loss are different for everyone. While these methods may not suit every pet owner, here are a few suggestions.
1. Allow Yourself to Grieve Fully
When you lose your beloved cat, various emotions such as sadness, anger, and guilt well up.
This is a natural process, and there's no need to suppress it. It's important to grieve thoroughly, cry, and talk to someone to express your feelings. You can also write about it on social media like X (formerly Twitter).
2. Perform a Memorial Service for Your Beloved Cat
In some cases, commemorating and honoring your beloved cat can be a stepping stone to recovering from pet loss. Many pet owners have found that a cremation ceremony or a 49th-day memorial service provides a sense of closure, allowing them to feel "thankful."
There are no strict rules for how to grieve. You can express your gratitude to your deceased cat by looking at photos or videos, or by displaying their favorite toys or collar.

3. Create a New Daily Routine
After the passing of your beloved cat, you may feel pain at unexpected moments. The absence of habits like feeding them in the morning or playing and petting them before bed can intensify the symptoms of pet loss.
If you're feeling down, try creating a new daily routine. Small changes in your life, such as making a leisurely cup of coffee in the morning or watching an episode of a drama before bed, can help change your mood.
4. Seek Counseling
Pet loss can sometimes be difficult to overcome alone. If you're experiencing physical or mental distress, consider seeking psychological support.
Talking to a specialist or counselor knowledgeable about pet loss can help you understand how to cope with your feelings. You can receive counseling in person or online, so consider reaching out for help.
5. Welcome a New Cat
You might think it's disrespectful to get another cat so soon after losing your beloved one, but having another cat in your life won't erase your memories.
The more precious the time you spent with your departed cat was, the more natural it is to "want to live with a cat again."
Haven't you heard the saying, "Your departed cat will change its fur and come back from heaven"? You might someday meet a cat that makes you feel, "This is the one." For that day, it's important to look forward.
Summary

The death of a beloved cat is a great sorrow for any owner. You might feel a strong sense of regret, thinking, "I wish I had done more," or "Was my cat truly happy with me?"
It's not easy to recover from the death of a beloved cat. However, feelings of regret can worsen the symptoms of pet loss. After a good cry, it's also important to send off your cat with gratitude.
While methods for healing from pet loss vary from person to person, we hope this article offers some helpful guidance.
