Messages from my Beloved Cat after Pet Loss - 5 Mysterious Experiences of an Owner

I'm not the type to believe in spiritual or supernatural things. However, after experiencing several strange occurrences after my beloved cat Jiji passed away, I've come to think that there might be non-scientific phenomena caused by pets' feelings for their grieving owners. This time, I'd like to share some of the mysterious events I actually experienced.

I felt my beloved cat's warmth the night before she passed away

My beloved cat Jiji passed away on May 16, 2025. The day before, as I was going to sleep, I was surprised by a soft sensation I felt at my feet. Having lived together for many years, I knew. That soft sensation was unmistakably Jiji's fur touching my feet.

For some reason, Jiji had always loved to snuggle up to my feet. It was a softness I had felt dozens, hundreds of times, so I thought, "Ah, that's Jiji."

 At our house, we sleep separately from our cats. So, it was physically impossible for Jiji's fur to touch my feet.

And yet, for that one moment, I had the sensation that Jiji was snuggled up to my feet, and I felt happy, thinking, "Even if I can't see her, Jiji's heart might be close to me."

 Looking back now, perhaps that was a gentle message from Jiji, thinking of me not being sad after pet loss, saying, "Even if you can't see me, I'm still by your side."

My husband saw our beloved cat the day after she passed away

"Who do you think will dream of Jiji first?" After Jiji passed away, my husband and I talked about this, and for a while, it became a routine to ask each other, "Did you dream of Jiji today?" before sharing what happened that day.

Ultimately, I was the first to dream of Jiji. But my husband saw Jiji in a form even more real than a dream.

It was the day after Jiji passed away. When I asked my husband, who had returned from work, "Did you dream of Jiji?" he mumbled, "I didn't dream, but..."

When I asked, "What happened?" he told me about the strange phenomenon he witnessed: "When I woke up in the morning and opened the door to enter the living room, something like a calico cat darted into the living room at incredible speed..."

Like me, my husband doesn't believe in spiritual things. So, he couldn't believe what he saw and convinced himself, "I was probably half-asleep."

After she passed away, Jiji was laid to rest in the cool hallway. Perhaps Jiji's spirit had stayed there all along, and the day after the cremation, when my husband opened the living room door, she thought, "Now's my chance!" and came into the living room where everyone was.

Honestly, I felt conflicted after my husband told me he saw what looked like Jiji, a calico cat, enter the living room. Why couldn't I see her? Why didn't she appear before me? Thinking that made me very sad.

Then, one night, unable to sleep, I went to the living room alone. And when I casually looked up at the cat walk where Jiji always relaxed, a cat-like shadow was illuminated by the lights of cars driving on the nearby road.

Huh! Could it be Jiji!? Startled, and wanting to see her, I turned on the light, and the shadow disappeared.

Jiji, if you were quietly enjoying yourself alone at that moment, I'm sorry for disturbing you. I'm sorry that my desire to see you for a moment got ahead of me. Please relax in your favorite spot anytime again. I'm confident that this time, I won't disturb you and will just leave you be, thinking, "You're here."

The remaining cat made the same sound as my deceased cat

After Jiji's passing, the other cats in the house lost their energy and appetite for a while, as if they were mourning their companion in their own cat way. Kotaro, a tabby, wasn't on good terms with Jiji when she was alive, but he was clearly dejected.

Our family discussed, "Humans also get surprisingly lonely when they lose someone they can fight with, so maybe it's the same for them."

The resident cats regained their energy about a month after Jiji's death. Then, one day, something strange happened to Kotaro... When I spoke to Kotaro after he woke up, he responded with the high-pitched "Kya-kya" and "Ky-wan" meows that Jiji used to make when she was alive.

Cats can sometimes make different sounds than usual when they try to vocalize right after waking up. I knew this as a fact, but I was surprised because the pitch and way of meowing were clearly Jiji's.

After two or three meows, Kotaro stood still, looking dazed for a while. It was as if his body had been borrowed... Somehow, I felt that way, and a slight chill ran down my spine.

Perhaps Jiji, to get revenge for all the fights they had when she was alive, temporarily borrowed Kotaro's body. If it was Jiji, who had a mischievous side, it's a plausible story, and I find myself strangely convinced.

My sister and I had a dream about a cat with the exact same pattern

This year, when my sister's family returned home for Obon, my sister and I discussed our dreams about cats and were left speechless.

After Jiji passed away, I had dreamed of her two or three times. At first, she had a calico pattern, and I clearly recognized her as "Jiji!", but as I dreamed more often, Jiji's appearance gradually changed. For some reason, her pattern became a "hachiware" (bicolor cat with a V-shaped marking on the forehead).

Moreover, it wasn't black and white, but a unique color pattern with one side being dark gray and the other pure white.

Since I had praised a hachiware cat on TV as "cute" when Jiji was alive, perhaps Jiji, who loved my husband, might be reborn as a hachiware with this pattern next.

Thinking that, I didn't mention the cat's pattern from my dream, but only told my sister that I had a strange dream.

Then, my sister replied, "Huh... I also dreamed of holding a cat with a unique pattern... And for some reason, I was crying so much, it surprised even me."

When I asked her to draw what the cat looked like, it had the exact same pattern as the cat in my dream... I was so surprised that I got goosebumps.

I will be reborn with this pattern next, so all relevant parties, please report it to my humble servant as soon as you find me—perhaps Jiji is using dreams as a way to visit relatives, wanting to convey that message.

Jiji, let's definitely be a family again. Just as we promised before you passed away, you'll surely give me, the dense one, some kind of sign, and I feel like I'll know "Ah, that's Jiji" just by looking into her eyes. No matter what fur color or pattern you have, I'll make you happy, so please come home soon.

As I pray, holding her urn, sadness and affection mix, and I still cry.

Cats care for their owners more than humans think. Perhaps the strange phenomena after pet loss are love calls from our beloved cats.
