[Written by a Veterinarian] Can Cats Suffer from "Metal Allergies"? Protecting Your Beloved Cat's Skin from Collars and Bowls, and Recognizing Symptoms

I'm Goto, director of Agate Animal Clinic. Sometimes in the examination room, we receive consultations such as, "My cat scratched its neck until the fur fell out," or "The area under its chin is red and swollen." We tend to receive more of these consultations, especially from spring to autumn.

It's very distressing for owners to see their beloved cat scratching with its paws or licking itself repeatedly. In some cases, the cause of the itching can be metal. This time, we will thoroughly explain the symptoms, precautions, and specific measures regarding feline "metal allergies."

What is feline "metal allergy"? Causes and signs of easily overlooked symptoms

Metal dissolves in sweat and sebum, causing an allergic reaction

"Metal allergy" is also called contact dermatitis, and it causes inflammation in the area where the metal comes into contact. When metal comes into contact with cat's sebum, saliva, etc., trace amounts of metal ions dissolve, which then combine with proteins in the skin. The body then recognizes this as a "foreign substance" and triggers an excessive immune response (allergy). It is characterized by appearing in the area where the metal has made contact.

[Checklist] Watch out for these symptoms

  • Intense scratching in areas of metal contact (around the neck, under the chin, etc.)
  • Redness, eczema, or dandruff on the skin
  • Localized hair loss (bald spots)
  • Skin is wet or crusty, or scabs are forming

If these symptoms persist or recur in areas that have been in contact with metal, metal allergy should be suspected.

Caution! The risk of metal allergies lurking in cat "collars" and "ID tags"

Hair loss and rashes around the neck can be caused by "metal fittings"

Of all cat items, the collar is in closest contact with the skin for the longest time. There are many cases where skin inflammation is caused by the collar buckle, size adjustment metal fittings, bells, and metal ID tags constantly touching and rubbing against the skin. Even without obvious inflammation, hair loss can occur due to allergies.

How to choose a skin-friendly collar to prevent allergies

It is important to choose collars that do not use any metal parts, or that have a structure where metal does not directly touch the skin. Collars using plastic safety buckles and those made of natural materials like cotton or silk with less friction are recommended.

Often overlooked? The relationship between cat "food bowls" and allergies

Black bumps on the chin (feline acne) and stainless steel dishes

Although stainless steel food bowls may appear durable and hygienic, they can actually be a cause of metal allergies. The chin secretes a lot of sebum, so each time the cat eats, the rim of the bowl touches its chin, potentially dissolving metal ions into the sebum and causing a metal allergy. The black bumps and red swelling under the chin, known as "feline acne (comedones)", are considered a type of allergic reaction, and metal allergy is pointed out as a possible cause.

Switch to non-metal dishes such as ceramic or glass

If your cat is scratching under its chin or has redness, simply changing its dishes to ceramic, glass, or good quality plastic can sometimes completely alleviate the symptoms.

Treatment and measures when feline metal allergy is suspected

Diagnosis and treatment at the veterinary hospital

Absolutely do not apply over-the-counter human medications based on your own judgment. In fact, many owners say, "I applied human itch relief medicine before visiting the vet." Such medications are not only harmful to cats but can also interfere with test results. Please never do this.

At the veterinary hospital, we conduct interviews, visual examinations, and skin tests (to rule out other causes such as fungi or mites). Allergy diagnosis cannot be made by appearance alone; if pathogens are ruled out based on living environment, history of flea and tick treatment, and skin test results, then allergy is considered a possibility.

If symptoms are severe, oral medications such as antibiotics or steroids to temporarily suppress itching, or topical medications, are prescribed to break the cycle of itching.

[Veterinarian recommended] Fundamental measures to reduce metal in the living environment

The best treatment and measure is to identify the metal allergen and remove it from the living environment. Although blood tests are available to identify allergens, metals are not included in the target items, so it is necessary to remove all contacting metals. Not only collars and dishes, but also metal combs and slicker brushes used for brushing can be a cause, so try switching to a rubber brush and observe.

Summary: Be particular about the "materials" of things that directly touch your beloved cat's skin

まとめ:愛猫の肌に直接触れるものは「素材」までこだわろう

Feline metal allergies can cause prolonged dermatitis in response to metals used in collars, dishes, and other items. Reconsider the materials that touch your cat. Switch dishes and collars to non-metal materials and consult with a veterinary hospital.

Itching is a great stress for cats. Not overlooking small signs like "my cat seems itchy," and paying attention to the "materials" of items that touch their skin every day will help protect your beloved cat's comfortable and healthy life.
