Cats' skin is very delicate, and it seems many of them experience skin problems.

When cats constantly lick themselves due to itchiness or discomfort, or even without any skin abnormalities, this persistent licking is called "excessive grooming."

Poponeko's "cat-friendly clothing" product development began with thorough research. To find out what kind of cat clothing was needed by cats and their owners, and what challenges actual users faced, we conducted a survey of 1600 cat owners. Based on the information gathered from their responses, we repeatedly developed prototypes for clothing exclusively for cats, rather than repurposing dog clothes. We iteratively tested hypotheses on what kind of cat clothing would be ideal for different situations where it might be needed, shaping the "needs articulated by experienced owners" into a tangible product.

Uses Toyobo's high-performance fiber "FEEL FINE®". In addition to warmth, it offers a soft texture and smooth feel, as well as excellent stretch, making it a comfortable material to wear. We've achieved a "stress-free design" that cats are less likely to dislike. It can be used as loungewear during chilly seasons, and also to prevent scratching and licking caused by excessive grooming.

To prevent the growth of germs and parasites that cause skin and fur problems and to keep the skin clean, it can be washed at home.

Hand wash or, if using a washing machine, place in a laundry net and wash on "delicate cycle." For drying, straighten wrinkles and air dry in the shade.

■How to get your cat used to wearing clothes

• When introducing cat clothes for the first time, do not force it. Start with short periods.
• Begin with a few minutes to about 10 minutes. If your cat strongly resists, remove the clothing immediately.
  
• Gradually acclimate your cat over several days to several weeks.
